Donor Screening & Recovery

Our OPO agencies recover quality tissue donors and are partners in the process of screening and serological testing.

Together, we utilize extensive evaluation criteria to identify eligible tissue donors, and AlloSource Medical Directors review and approve all donor medical information prior to tissue release. Our donor acceptance criteria are based on FDA and American Association of Tissue Banks (AATB) standards as well as additional standards set by the AlloSource Medical Advisory Board.

AlloSource requires a comprehensive donor physical assessment, as well as a complete medical and social history, to identify and eliminate donors who are at risk of being carriers of certain viruses and diseases. All recoveries are performed using sterile surgical techniques, and the bone, skin and soft tissue are stored pending donor eligibility determination and serological and microbiological test results.

The donor must test negative or non-reactive to tests for:

  • Antibody to Hepatitis C (HCV)
  • Antibody to Human Immunodeficiency Virus 1 & 2 (HIV 1 & 2)
  • Antibody to Human T-Cell Lymphotropic Virus Type I & II (HTLV I & II)
  • Hepatitis B Core IgG/IgM Antibody (HBcAb)
  • Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg)
  • Hepatitis C Virus (HCV NAT)
  • Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1 NAT)
  • Rapid Plasma Reagin or Serologic Test for Syphilis (RPR or STS)

All tests are conducted using available FDA-approved test kits.
