CENTENNIAL, Colo.— AlloSource, one of the nation’s largest non-profit providers of skin, bone and soft tissue allografts for use in surgical procedures and one of the nation’s largest providers of allograft skin for burn victims, announced today that it has pledged to donate $75,000 to The Children’s Hospital of Denver to support the extensive efforts of the burn center to treat and prevent burn injuries. The AlloSource gift will be earmarked for an expansion of the Juvenile Firesetters Program, which aims to stop at-risk youth from engaging in dangerous fire setting behavior. Fire setting is the primary cause of serious burns for American youth.
AlloSource, based in Centennial, Colorado, is the one of the nation’s largest providers of allograft skin used by burn centers to treat and heal severely burned patients. It is one of the few U.S. tissue networks providing fresh allograft skin, preferred by many surgeons to treat their most critically burned patients.
“Due to our close relationship with burn surgeons and survivors around the country, a part of our enduring commitment to serving this community is contributing to the cause of burn awareness and treatment,” said Thomas A. Cycyota, AlloSource President and Chief Executive Officer. “We are proud to make this gift to The Children’s Hospital Juvenile Firesetters Program, which is doing exceptional work to reduce preventable burn injuries.”
The AlloSource gift will be donated over three years and used by the Juvenile Firesetters Program (JFS), a component of The Children’s Hospital’s burn program. JFS provides evaluations of and education and counseling for children and adolescents who set fires. The program serves children throughout Colorado. The AlloSource gift will be used to support the weekly treatment and education of the children enrolled in this program, in addition to spearhead research on recidivism.
“This gift supports Children’s commitment to preventing burn injuries in children,” said Steve Moulton, MD, Director of the Burn and Trauma Programs at The Children’s Hospital. “We strive to educate children, parents and health-care providers about the most common ways children get burned, and ways to prevent such injuries.”
In conjunction with its gift, AlloSource employees will tour The Children’s Hospital Burn Clinic and participate in various volunteering activities with the hospital. Additionally, an AlloSource representative will speak at the 2008 JFS Group Treatment Program regarding the potential consequences of firesetting behavior.
